GERMAN TROOPS TO CELEBRATE END OF ERA
SHILO, Man. - The German Army will mark the end of 27 years of training at Canadian Forces Base Shilo with a firepower display for invited guests on Friday, as part of several close-out events scheduled for 1 and 2 September.
In addition, there will be the unveiling of a cairn, on Friday, commemorating the history of German training at CFB Shilo. On Saturday, a German troop parade and vehicle display will be held at noon at Brandon City Hall. Premier Gary Doer, local officials, and several high-ranking military officials from both the Canadian and German Armies are expected to attend some of the events.
"The German Army has really become part of the fabric in the local communities," said Lieutenant-Colonel Rick Wilson, Base Commander, CFB Shilo. "They are much more than outstanding military professionals, they are our friends and neighbours. We will miss them."
"CFB Shilo has provided the German Army with an excellent armoured training area for over 25 years," said Lieutenant-Colonel Günter Marquard, Commanding Officer, German Army Training Establishment Shilo (GATES). "For many of us, Shilo and surrounding communities are like a second home."
The German Army has been using CFB Shilo primarily for armoured (tank) training since 1974. They announced their intention to discontinue using the base for training in December 1999, as part of an overall German Army restructuring plan aimed at cost savings. Some 135,000 German troops have trained at the base since the inception of GATES.
